Luther brings a broad range of wisdom and experience in advising clients in Executive Compensation & Benefits, Business Exit Planning, Wealth Planning and Disability Planning for high income professionals and athletes. He enjoys working with privately held businesses, entrepreneurs, compensation committees of public companies, corporate executives, and family offices in collaboration with their team of professional advisors. Luther started his career in Atlanta in the late 1980s, merged his practice with the firm in 1996 and was named partner prior to the sale of the business to Wachovia (now Wells Fargo) in 1999. During the firm’s period of ownership by the bank he held a number of leadership positions including Managing Director of the Executive Benefits Group where he was responsible for the origination, plan design and service for over $2 Billion of retirement assets. Luther also served as Managing Director-National Accounts for the National Wealth Management team and supported Calibre (now Abbot Downing) the Family Office practice. He led the effort to repurchase the firm from Wells Fargo in early 2009.

Luther’s industry involvement is extensive, where he serves as a voice for his clients. He has chaired AALU’s Business Insurance and Estate Planning Committee, and served as President of both the Charlotte Chapter of the Charlotte Estate Planning Council and Society of Financial Services Professionals. He is a member of the Charlotte Area Compensation Council, Charlotte Benefits Forum, World at Work, the National Association for Employee Ownership and the National Association of Plan Advisors. He is a member of Young Presidents Organization (YPO), past Chairman of YPO in North Carolina and past member of the Southern 7 Chapter Board.

In the community, Luther is on the Board of Directors of the Carolinas Healthcare System Foundation where he has been actively involved with the McColl-Lockwood Lab for Muscular Dystrophy Research. He is Vice Chairman of the Board of Trustees at Discovery Place/Charlotte Nature Museum where he chairs the Finance and Investment Policy Committees.

Luther earned a degree in Risk Management and Insurance from the University of Georgia Terry College of Business, currently ranked as the #1 insurance program in America by US News and World Report. He’s an active alumnus serving on the UGA Alumni Association Board, as an Emeritus Member of the Terry Alumni Advisory Board and as a Guest Lecturer-Practitioner at the College. Luther holds the CLU, ChFC, Accredited Estate Planner (AEP), Registered Health Underwriter (RHU) designations. He is a member of the Advisory Committee of M Holding Securities where is an Investment Advisor Representative (IAR).

David Miller, Managing Director

David Miller is Managing Director at MBL Advisors, a boutique advisory firm specializing in executive and corporate retirement benefits, wealth and investment management, and private client insurance solutions. David brings a diversified and in-depth level of expertise and experience to his clients. His decade plus of experience in wealth and investment management has created the foundation to be their most Trusted Advisor. He specializes in working with high net worth individuals, corporate executives, retirees, entrepreneurs and professional athletes. He is focused on developing customized investment strategies designed to meet the overall financial independence goals and investment objectives of his clients. He brings a customized, analytical, and proven process of success to his clients to help them navigate the financial landscape.

He started his career as an analyst with an investment management firm in Washington D.C., while there he was tasked with research and analysis of portfolio holdings. In 2005, he joined Northwestern Mutual and a d/b/a of the firm, Powell Financial. He helped take Powell Financial, Inc. private in 2007, forming their own Registered Investment Advisor, and specializing as a full service wealth management firm. He spent the last 9 years there as a partner and the dynamic center of the firm helping oversee the firm's investment and planning process. Considered a rising star in the industry, David has been recognized as a 2014 winner of Registered Rep Magazine’s “Advisors with Heart” award, the Charlotte Business Journal’s 40 under 40 award in 2015 as well as the first recipient of the Presidential Merit Award from Pfeiffer University.

David earned a B.A. degree from Pfeiffer University; attending on a 4 year soccer scholarship. He later earned his MBA from East Carolina's College of Business. He holds his Series 65, Life and Health, and Long Term Care Insurance Licenses.

In the community, David is actively involved with his Alma mater, he is a member of Pfeiffer University's Alumni Board, and the Falcon Club Board of Directors. He serves as a mentor to MBA students at the East Carolina's College of Business and enjoys the interaction with next generation talent. He is also very involved with The Kuykenstrong Foundation, where he is a Director and the Treasurer. Kuykenstrong is a registered non-profit in Virginia working with The Lombardi Cancer Center at Georgetown University to help children with cancer.



Don Payne, Managing Director

Don works with our clients and their advisors to implement advanced life insurance planning strategies to best fit a complex need. With our experienced team, he comprehensively reviews existing plans and life insurance policy portfolios to provide better premium efficiency and secure our clients’ coverage needs for the long-term. He brings over 25 years of extensive financial services industry experience covering strategic planning, medical and financial underwriting, advanced design, market development and management.

Previously Don served as Managing Partner of Harris, Crouch, Long, Scott & Miller where he developed best practices for underwriting, case design and ongoing services for ultra-high net worth families. He directly managed key client relationships and worked with their closest professional advisors. Prior to that, Don was with the Todd Organization, a national provider of non-qualified benefit plans and served as Vice President, Chief Compliance Officer and Chief Financial Officer of its broker dealer. He was one of the founding officers of the broker dealer and coordinated their successful membership approval with the NASD (now FINRA). In addition to holding Life and Health, and Long Term Care Insurance Licenses, Don also holds his Series 6, 26, 27, 63 and 65 FINRA licenses.

Don earned a Master’s in Business Administration and a Bachelor of Arts in Computer Science from East Carolina University and has earned the CLU, ChFC and CFP professional designations. He is a long-standing member of the Association of Advanced Life Underwriting (AALU) where he previously served as Vice Chairman of the Business Insurance and Estate Planning Committee. He’s a Past President of the Piedmont Estate and Business Planning Council and was previously a member of the PartnersFinancial Advisory Board and served as Chairman of the Compensation Committee.


Susan Catoe, Personal Lines

Susan began her personal lines insurance career with a third-generation owned firm. This experience of working with families that had been clients for three generations showed her that a focus on client service, and the ability to serve families now and into the future, was how she wished to build her career.

Relocating to the Carolinas in 1998, Susan joined the Cameron M. Harris Agency team as a senior client manager. From there she became part of the BB&T Insurance Service, managing a widespread group of clients. Most recently, Susan was part of Hub International, a small brokerage firm that specializes in affluent client management. She worked with Family Office programs in counseling and review of their insurance portfolios.

Susan takes a comprehensive view of her clients’ needs, from protection of assets through placement of appropriate insurance coverage. Her move to MBL Advisors assures our clients that their needs will never be overlooked.



Kristy Partin, CFP®, CFO

Kristy is a Certified Public Accountant and Certified Financial PlannerTM with 10 years of financial and tax experience in working with high net worth individuals. In addition to her role at MBL Advisors, Kristy is the Chief Financial Officer of McColl Brothers Lockwood, LLC, the McColl and Lockwood family office and serves as a resource to MBL clients in the wealth transfer area.

Prior to joining MBL Advisors, Kristy served as Tax Manager at Pesta, Finnie & Associates, LLP where she worked from 2007 to 2012. Kristy began her career in the Private Client Services Group at PricewaterhouseCoopers in Charlotte. Throughout her career, she has assisted closely-held entities and individuals with tax strategy, planning, compliance and general business advisory services. Kristy received a B.S. and Masters in Accounting from East Carolina University.
